There’s no denying Superstar Billy Graham
was ahead of his time. Imagine a slightly more colorful Scott Steiner
misplaced in time by 20 years in the past, and you’d have a good
idea of what the Superstar was like. That’s not an off remark
either, as Steiner pretty much riffed the whole gimmick from Graham,
down to calling himself Superstar Scott Steiner shortly after turning
heel. Graham is a former WWF champion. He’s a legend in the sport.
So why is he here? This is why...
 |
“So
what?” I hear you ask. “He looks pretty normal to
me.” Well, yes and no. See, the backstory here is that about
this time, Graham had just returned to the WWF after about a 2-3
year absence. And when he returned, he wasn’t the Superstar
people had once paid to boo at. No, he had ditched the tye-dye
and bleach blonde hair for a kung-fu gimmick.
“Still,”
you say “that’s not so bad.” Well, imagine it
this way: Just picture, when Stone Cold Steve Austin returned
to the ring earlier in 2000, after a year’s layoff, he had
returned with a full head of hair, wearing hippie clothing and
was dancing. Now imagine that picture in reverse. With a kung-fu
gimmick.
|
I can’t
stress the kung-fu enough. At
least it was better than what was to come, as Billy eventually lost
his battle to steroid abuse and was forced to retire from the ring.
But before he did, he traveled down to Florida and hooked up with Kevin
Sullivan, who’s an entry all unto himself real soon.
