It's one of those "blink and you'll totally
miss it" gimmicks that show up in wrestling from time to time.
"Dr. Death"
Steve Williams (not the same Steve Williams aka Steve Austin), had entered
the WWF for the first time, and was being pushed to the sky. Then, he
got his butt knocked out by Bart Gunn in the BRAWL FOR ALL debacle,
and "Doc", who's wrestling reputation is legendary, lost a
good bit of his cred, and lost all of his push, in the process.
 |
Doc
was taken off tv for a while. Then one night, during Raw, Bart
Gunn was having a match with Hardcore Holly. Out of nowhere, a
huge guy in red suit and a demonic mask attacked Gunn on the rampway
and threw him off, then did a few "karate" stance-chops.
It was immediately
known that it was Doc on the internet. The gimmick had been rumored
for some time that he would return in a kabuki gimmick and would
not unmask while wrestling.
The gimmick
was never seen again.

Soon after (the next
Raw, I imagine), Doc and Jim Ross came out, Doc in his regular clothes,
and, as was common in Russo-written angles, they shot on the WWF for trying
to make Doc wear the stupid suit. This was during Ross's brief "heel"
run during which he kicked Michael Cole in the little coles, and where
Williams almost broke Ed "Oklahoma" Ferrara's neck with a suplex.
Doc still didn't
have much impact in the WWF, as Ross's heel push came to an abrupt end,
and there was nothing for Doc to do. He soon showed up in WCW for a
few minutes before returning to his regular stomping grounds of Japan.

Here's
a pic of the mask from Doc's "Kabuki" outfit..
*Special thanks
