WCW. The one thing that always amazed me about that federation was the succession of gimmicks that were slapped on the various mid-carders. Most weren't as outlandish as the ones found in the WWF of the time, but they still had a certain...well, I don't know what to call it. But they were interesting to say the least.

For instance, take Cobra here. Obviously, Cobra is a military gimmick. But the various factors of the gimmick are what made this one stand out.

First, notice the insignia behind him. As some of you may recognize, that's a pretty direct lift from the "Cobra" logo from the G.I.Joe action figure line!

Secondly, his theme entrance. Well, I can't call it theme music as it consisted only of blips and bleeps used in Morse Code.

See, the backstory on Cobra, as near as I can tell, is that he once served in 'Nam, under the leadership of fellow WCW wrestler Sgt. Craig Pittman. Pittman apparently left Cobra behind during a mission, and now he wanted to even the score. Now, I watched the one ppv match these guys had and it was very hard to tell who was supposed to be face and who was supposed to be the heel, so I can't tell you if Cobra was a bad guy or not. Oh, and after all that build-up, his ppv match lasted all of 2 minutes.

Cobra, who was really Jeff Farmer and had previously wrestled in WCW as part of the low-card tag team Thunder and Lightning, would be repackaged soon after, this time as Bogus Sting of the NWO. He is now wrestling in Japan as Super J.
